“…

There’s also an automatic coal-in-the-stocking ban for the Annapolis Valley elves behind Let the Good News Ring! (Ruby Throated Records), who were inspired to come up with 14 completely new songs to soothe the yuletide souls of those seeking respite from the umpteenth airing of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer or — shudder — Little Drummer Boy.

The Hupman Brothers Band forms the core of the record, with Valley songwriters making individual contributions, from the reverence of Cuckoo Moon’s Blessed Night and Donna Holmes’s The Christmas Story to irreverent wishes for a return to basics by Mike Aube (Jesus Christ, It’s Christmas Again) and Pete Adams (Christmas on Credit).

The Hupmans get the spotlight, too, asking the age-old question Whatever Happened to the Wisemen? and their playing throughout (with some lovely pedal steel from Asa Brosius) does a wonderful job of tying all these distinct voices and viewpoints together.
